Weed Mats, Pegs & Staples
The first three years of growth is most important for young trees if they are to thrive and flourish. Mulching around the base helps with this development as young trees require moisture and obtain essential nutrients needed to survive in these early years. It also helps to suppress the growth of weeds around the trees root system which if allowed to grow will take the majority of moisture which seriously reduces the trees growth rate.
Therefore a weed suppressant mat will be of great benefit to a young tree in these early years as it will allow the moisture to feed the tree but also stop the surrounding area from drying out and cracking. The area of weed suppressant should extend by at least 0.5m in any direction from the stem, so allowing the full root system to become fully established and support fast growth rates.
